JOSE M. HERNANDEZ, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Dr. Hernandez was born in San Juan, Puerto Rico, USA. He received his bachelor's degree in Biology and Chemistry from the University of Puerto Rico with honors (Magna Cum Laude). He completed his medical degree in Puerto Rico. Upon receiving his M.D. degree, he began his general surgical residency at Nassau County Medical Center/State University of New York at Stony Brook. He continued his training in genitourinary surgery at the New York Medical College in Valhalla, New York. Dr. Hernandez completed a one year fellowship in Endourologic Surgery (percutaneous surgery, laser and laproscopy) at the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis. He was Director of the Urology Department at Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx and Assistant Professor of Urology at New York Medical College and a member of the Admissions committee for five years prior to moving to Peoria. Dr. Hernandez has published multiple scientific papers and over eight chapters in medical textbooks. He served for five years as Associate Editor of Urology, one of the leading journals in urology. Presently he serves as reviewer for Urology, Journal of Endourology, Military Medicine Journal, and as a member of the Editorial Board of Peoria Medicine Journal. Dr. Hernandez also serves as a medical consultant for Consumers Union, Merck and Alza Pharmaceuticals. Presently he serves as a member of the Medical Board of the Prostatitis Foundation, Inc. Dr. Hernandez belongs to multiple national and international professional organizations including Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He is also a Diplomate of the American Board of Urology and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. Dr. Hernandez is a Lieutenant Colonel in the US Army Reserve Medical Corps and served as a Medical Officer during Desert Storm. In 1997, Dr. Hernandez was selected as a consultant of the Department of Defense Command for distribution of the $38 million allocated for prostate cancer research. Dr. Hernandez has also served as a member of the American Urological Association Task Force for the FY 1996. In 1999 he was re-appointed to the American Urological Assessment Council-Surgical Simulation Subcommittee. In 1993, Hernandez was listed in "Who's Who in Hispanic America."
Dr. Hernandez entered into practice with Peoria Urological Associates in 1993. His primary interests include minimally invasive surgery, prostate disorders, genitourinary cancer, urinary incontinence and impotence. His personal interests include photography, computers, bicycling, aquariums, marine biology, classical music, military history, astronomy, and philosophy.
Dr. Hernandez resides in Peoria with his wife, Paula, and their five children.
